Using Shapes
By now, I hope you're inspired to doodle and create your own unique drawings. In this lesson, I want to share a fun idea to doodle when you're looking to practice your skills! The next few lessons will provide exercises to turn to when you need a creative boost or want to practice to strengthen your muscle memory.
Let's start with a simple shape—circles!
Tips & Tricks:
- Think of doodling as breaking things down into the simplest shapes possible.
- Use the pdf download from this lesson behind your paper. This will allow you to see the basic circle shape and build your doodle from there.
- Add in more simple shapes, such as squares and triangles, to create more images. Remember, everything is a combination of basic shapes.
- Use parts of the circle. Your images don’t have to contain a complete circle—just the foundation of it. Once you’ve got your image, erase what you don’t need.
- This technique can be used when you want to draw anything. Break it down into its most basic form and then build up from there.
When you start with a base form, such as a circle, you can then work from there to give your doodle life. The extra features you add to a basic shape make your doodle unique and fun. And once you understand this concept, you can use simple shapes to draw anything!
Spend some time practicing this technique and then meet me in the next lesson for another doodling exercise!
ASSIGNMENT: Print the PDF attached to this lesson and start doodling with circles as your base! Draw apples, pumpkins, waffles, dogs, cats, chickens—the sky is the limit here. The more you practice, the better you'll get at using basic shapes to doodle anything you want!
